2025: A Year of Consolidation for Tinubu’s Administration – Information Minister
The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, has declared 2025 a year of consolidation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
He described it as a critical phase for building upon the achievements recorded in the past 19 months.
Speaking at a ministerial press briefing in Abuja, Idris outlined key reforms and interventions that have shaped the administration’s progress as it approaches its mid-term. He emphasized that the focus for the year would be on deepening economic stability, advancing infrastructure development, improving security, and enhancing social interventions.
The removal of the fuel subsidy has reportedly saved the country hundreds of billions of Naira annually by eliminating financial leakages.
To stabilize the foreign exchange market, the government introduced the Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System (EFEMS).
This has brought unprecedented stability, cleared billions of dollars in backlogs, and boosted investor confidence. The Naira recently reached an eight-month high in the official market.
Nigeria has also emerged as Africa’s top destination for oil and gas investments. In 2024, the country secured over $5 billion in Final Investment Decisions (FIDs).
The new Electricity Act provides a framework for state governments to establish regulated electricity markets, following a constitutional amendment.
In a landmark ruling in July 2024, the Supreme Court granted financial independence to local governments. An inter-ministerial committee has been established to ensure compliance with this ruling.
The Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has provided financial assistance to over 169,000 students, disbursing N32.8 billion for tuition and upkeep.
New development commissions have been set up for the North-Central, South-East, and North-West regions. Additionally, a Federal University of Environmental Technology has been established.
The Federal Executive Council approved $1.07 billion from the World Bank to support healthcare programs. This includes targeted subsidies for cancer patients.
A major passport reform effort in 2024 led to the clearance of a backlog of over 200,000 international passports within just three weeks.
To promote alternative fuel sources, over $450 million has been invested in developing Nigeria’s compressed natural gas (CNG) value chain.
The Tinubu administration has significantly increased infrastructure spending, approving over N2.5 trillion for key road projects. This includes N1.334 trillion for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, N470.9 billion for access roads to the Second Niger Bridge, and N195 billion for the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
In 2024, security forces recorded significant successes. Over 8,000 terrorists and bandits were neutralized, while 8,000 kidnap victims were rescued.
To strengthen anti-kidnapping efforts, a Multi-Agency Anti-Kidnap Fusion Cell was established in collaboration with the UK’s National Crime Agency.h
The government created the Ministry of Livestock Development. This initiative aims to unlock multi-billion-dollar opportunities in agriculture and has contributed to a reduction in grain prices.
On December 18, 2024, President Tinubu presented a proposed budget of N49.7 trillion. It was later revised to N54.2 trillion following increased revenue projections.
The budget prioritizes key sectors, allocating N4.91 trillion for security, N4.06 trillion for infrastructure, N3.52 trillion for education, and N2.48 trillion for health.
Minister Idris reaffirmed that President Tinubu’s policies are driving greater fiscal capacity, tax reforms, and improved living standards.
“We are witnessing a transformative era, where hope is being renewed for all Nigerians, regardless of age or gender, across the nation,” he said.
As 2025 progresses, the administration aims to consolidate its achievements while addressing emerging challenges. The goal is to lay a strong foundation for sustained national growth and development.
