Reps urge FG to reconstruct Lafiya-Karim-Lamido road in Adamawa State
Following a motion moved by Honourable Kwamoti Bitrus Laori, member representing Demsa/Numan/Lamurde Federal Constituency, House of Representatives urged the Federal Government to reconstruct the 90.5 kilometres Lafiya-Lamurde-Karim-Lamido road.
In a motion on “Reconstruction of 90.5 Kilometers Lafiya-Lamurde-Karim-Lamido in Adamawa State” on Wednesday, hon. Laori noted that despite the enormous economic value of the road, it has been in a very deplorable condition for two decades thereby subjecting the commuters and farmers to untold hardship.
He stated that the road which links Adamawa and Taraba States was constructed in 1986/1987 and runs through one of the largest rice production hubs in the Northeast.
Disturbed that the deplorable condition of the road is negatively impacting on socio-economic activities in the region, thus causing avoidable losses of invaluable lives and properties.
The lawmaker stated that no fewer 800-1000 trucks ply the on the market days, transporting rice and other products to other parts of the country.
He further stated that the present condition of the road is affecting business activities and frustrating the federal government’s program of sustainable agriculture, local rice production and food security in the country.
Hon. Laori is concerned that the present state of the road is negatively impacting on the socio-economic lives of the people in the communities along the stretch of the road as the important interstate trade link it provides for movement of persons, goods and services across Adamawa/Taraba States is no longer achievable.
He stated that the when the road is reconstructed, the socio-economic importance of the road to both national economy and those of the States it traverse will receive boost, generate employment, reduce accidents which lead to loss of lives and destruction of properties and also improve the general wellbeing and security of the people.
The house, therefore, urged the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to award contract for the reconstruction of the Lafiya-Lamurde-Karim-Lamido road and mandated the Committees on Works and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance.
