Your professionalism enhanced our milestone achievement in the 9th Senate: Lawan commends Media.
The President of the Senate, (Dr) Ahmad Lawan has given a pass mark to members of the Senate Press Corps on their objectivity and professionalism in the reportage of the parliament during the 9th Senate, reiterating that it aided them in the landmark achievement witnessed during his tenure.
Speaking during a thank you for being a worthy partner in progress (valedictory session),he emphasized that they are the best set of journalists he has worked with during his 24 years in the parliament, ” your objective reportage of our activities gave us the impetus to be focused on delivering on our programs when when we came on board since 2019,” he added.
Giving an assessment of his four -year tenure, he pointed out that the parliament has recorded alot of first which includes; 120 bills passed by parliament and assented to by Muhammadu Buhari (Former President), returning the budget circle from January-December, the passage of the PIA into law.
He noted that the 9th National Assembly had been the most stable as it was crisis free unlike the previous ones where the issues of mismanagement of funds and bi partisan politics were the order of the day to such an extent that the press had to be pleaded with not to air some portions of the sessions which were thougt to be embarrassing to the parliament.
Part of the reasons why we succeeded is that we first of all consider ourselves as Senators of the Federal Republic irrespective of political parties, we had the unity and peaceful coexistence of the country at heart in every decision arrived at beyond party affiliation.
“We achieved much in the 9th assembly because we were united among ourselves irrespective of our political parties. We resolved to work as Senators of Nigeria and not that of our parties,”he posited.
Another aspect was the fact that, you stood by us, you reported us as partners in progress of the project Nigeria. Your relationship with us was cordial and that translated into the action we put in,in working for the nation, i implore you to continue with the relationship beyond the office as some of us are returning but not as principal officers.
Our relationship with the executive arm of government is complementary, but not confrontational, and we understood it as such knowing fully well that nothing can be achieved in a hostile environment, with the cordiality that existed alot had been achieved for Nigerian.
I want you to extend the same hand of fellowship to the leadership of the 10th National Assembly when it is inaugurated so that Nigerians will continue to reap the benefit of good governance and purposeful leadership through quality representation, he enthused.
