Defence Minister urges troops to eliminate oil theft, commends progress in oil production
The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has called on the troops of the Headquarters Joint Task Force South South Operation Delta Safe to intensify efforts to eradicate crude oil theft and related illegal activities.
This call came as the nation’s crude oil production has increased from approximately 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) to about 1.7 million bpd.
In a statement released by Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information and Public Relations, the minister made these remarks during his maiden visit to the headquarters in Bayelsa State.
The Minister praised the troops for dismantling 1,129 illegal refineries since February 2024 and applauded their ongoing efforts to combat oil theft and other forms of economic sabotage.
“Crude oil production has risen to about 1.7 million barrels per day, and I am confident that it will reach 2 million bpd by December 2024 and 2.5 million bpd by mid-2025,” Abubakar state, expressing optimism about further gains in the sector.
He underscored the critical need to protect national infrastructure, particularly oil pipelines, which are vital to the transportation of crude oil.
The Minister lauded the troops for their renewed commitment to fighting illegal refineries and safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests.
Rear Admiral JU Okeke, Commandant of the Joint Task Force, reported a significant 85% drop in oil theft and illegal refinery activities during the second and third quarters of 2024.
This achievement has contributed to the steady rise in crude oil output over recent months.
During his address, the Minister conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appreciation for the troops’ bravery and dedication despite the challenging terrain. He urged them to continue their efforts until oil theft is completely eliminated, assuring them of the government’s support in their mission.
With crude oil production on the rise, the government’s focus remains on securing the nation’s resources and boosting economic growth.
