Defence Headquarters Debunks Rumours of Acting Chief of Army Staff Appointment

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed claims circulating in the media regarding the appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
In a statement signed by Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the DHQ clarified that no such appointment has been made within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
The current Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, is on a scheduled annual leave, and the AFN continues to operate seamlessly, with all Service Chiefs performing their duties as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution.
Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is providing routine updates to the COAS during his absence, following standard procedures.
The DHQ urged those spreading unfounded rumours to stop immediately, assuring the public that Lieutenant General Lagbaja is in good health and will resume his duties upon the conclusion of his leave.
It also called on media outlets to verify their reports with the appropriate authorities before disseminating false information.
In the same statement, the DHQ addressed a viral video advocating for a military takeover, warning that such calls are treasonable offenses under the Nigerian Constitution.
The military remains committed to upholding democracy and supporting the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“The relative peace being enjoyed today is a direct result of the President’s support for the military and the dedication of the AFN leadership,” the statement added.
The DHQ reassured Nigerians of the military’s unwavering focus on protecting the nation’s integrity and stressed that the AFN, along with other security agencies, will take necessary action against any individual or group attempting to undermine the country’s democratic process.
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their continued support and prayers, affirming that victory over the country’s challenges is assured.
