It is no longer news that carpet crossing in political erana has become common among politicians. Worthy of news is the role of the masses in this political practice. What should should to be taken into consideration is the quality and the credibility of the people that are presenting or are being presented by political party to govern the affairs of our nation. This is because, whether we like it or not, it goes a long way to determine the progress of our country.
It is a public opinion that politicians that are giving up allegiance of one political party for another due to their personal interests. Though in all spheres of life, personal gains arer often protected before any other thing. It is not wrong for anybody to protect their own interest. If this is true in it’s entirety, the masses also have their own roles to play in order to ensure that we have a country of our dreams. Fortunately the role of the masses is simple. You can always beat the politician to their games by voting only for credible leaders irrespective of political party.
Defection, in my own opinion should not be a tool for scoring cheap political points. The practice of party switching, defections or carpet crossing appears to be an undying attribute of party politics in Nigeria. It is worthy of note that party defections are not exclusive character of a particular party in Nigeria. It is a general practice. The current carpet crossing rocking the nation’s political parties raises fundamental questions on the sustainability of Nigerian peace and democracy.
Therefore, if the politicians are switching parties based on personal interest, the peace and democracy of our country can be protected by the masses by looking out for the leaders that are credible.
