Science is key to peaceful and sustainable societies -Onu
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has reiterated the need for the use of Science to promote peaceful and sustainable societies in the world order.
Speaking on the World Science Day 2018 with the theme “Science, a Human Right, on Monday in Abuja, Onu said Science ought to be used for the benefit of societies by both national and international communities.
He stressed the fact that everything which concerned mankind such as agriculture and health had to do with science and technology.
Onu, however, noted that the present administration recognised the importance of science and technology to national development.
He mentioned the efforts of the Federal Government at deploying Science and technology to grow the economy as contained in the National Strategy for Competitiveness in Raw Materials and Product Development in Nigeria.
The policy, he added sought to encourage local production of goods so as to create employment and conserve foreign exchange earnings. With this approach, Nigeria’s currency will compete favorably with other currencies in the world, he added.
The minister added that Nigeria is already benefiting from the National Science Technology and Innovation Roadmap as witnessed in increased participation of Nigerians in scientific activities.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Mr. Bitrus Bako Nabasu stressed the need to use the World Science Day to engage the wider public in emerging scientific issues.

In his address on the 2018 World Science Day celebrations. Mr. Nabasu said Science was relevant to our daily lives and therefore citizens must be kept well informed of developments in the Science, Technology and innovation (STI) sector.
He said the celebration coincided with the celebration of 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adding that everyone has a right to participate in and benefits from science for sustainable development.
According to Nabasu “World Science Day underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable environment we live in and in making our societies more sustainable by linking science more closely with society”
