Clarification on false reports regarding FCT Minister
In response to recent media articles, we find it imperative to address the unfounded claims surrounding the new FCT Minister, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, particularly regarding alleged demolitions and the use of a N300 million bulletproof car in Abuja.
This was contained in a statement signed by Anthony Ogunleye, Director of Press, Office of the Honourable Minister.
“We wish to unequivocally assert that these reports are entirely baseless and devoid of factual basis.
“An article published on August 22, 2023, by a national newspaper with the title “Abuja land: FG may revoke land allocations, demolish 6000 buildings, slums,” alongside another mainstream newspaper’s headline “Wadata Plaza will go down, Reactions trail Wike’s demolition threat,” suggested a mass demolition spree across Abuja’s settlements. However, it must be clarified that the Minister never specified areas or numbers of structures to be demolished. His focus has consistently been on the removal of illegal settlements and structures for the public good.
“Furthermore, a reputable broadcast station’s headline claimed that the Minister stated, “I will fix Abuja in 6 days.” It is crucial to clarify that the Minister never uttered such a phrase. This headline is entirely mischievous and fabricated.
“The Minister has a longstanding record of responsible urban development and public welfare, evident from his tenure as governor of Rivers State and his ongoing efforts within the FCT. Claims of orchestrated mass demolitions are not only unfounded but lack credibility.
“Such sensationalist reporting not only misleads the public but also undermines the role of accurate and well-researched journalism in our society.
“It is essential to remember that FCT’s development aligns with meticulously crafted policies, emphasizing sustainable urban growth and residents’ rights preservation. Decisions are rooted in comprehensive assessments, community engagement, and adherence to legal norms.
“Additionally, regarding the story concerning the alleged N300 million bulletproof car with the caption “This ₦300M Armored Lexus LX 600 fitted with ‘FCT – 01’ reportedly belongs to FCT Minister, Wike,” the Minister clarified on August 23, 2023, during his visit to the Abuja Metro station that the vehicle is not bulletproof but a regular SUV.
“We urge journalists, bloggers, and media outlets to practice responsible journalism by verifying information from authorized sources before dissemination. Fabricated stories damage the reputation of esteemed public figures and instill unnecessary anxiety among the populace.
“We emphasize that the Honourable Minister remains resolute in enhancing the residents’ quality of life in the FCT. Any contradictory claims stem from misinformation and should be treated as such”, the statement reads.
