Defence Minister Matawalle mourns Buhari, says Nigeria has lost a steadfast leader
The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle MON, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as a profound national loss.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Patience Ituke, Principal Superintendent of Press for the Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr. Matawalle extended his heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, noting that the late President’s passing comes at a time when the country could have greatly benefited from his wealth of experience and unique leadership style.
President Buhari, who died on Sunday in London, was praised by the Minister for his enduring contributions to national development and security. Matawalle commended the former president’s role in strengthening Nigeria’s defence architecture, particularly his unwavering support for the Nigerian Armed Forces in their ongoing battle against insecurity.
“The loss is not only for the Buhari family but for the entire nation that he served with unwavering dedication and commitment,” the Minister stated.
Dr. Matawalle further highlighted Buhari’s tenure as one marked by integrity, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility to the Nigerian people. He described the former president as a visionary whose governance was anchored on discipline, transparency, and national progress.
“President Buhari will be remembered for his resilience, focus on national integrity, and visionary leadership aimed at fostering a prosperous Nigeria,” Matawalle said. “The legacy he leaves behind will continue to inspire future generations as we navigate the challenges of nation-building.”
President Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 2015 to 2023, after previously leading the country as a military ruler in the 1980s. His influence on the country’s political and defence landscape, the Minister noted, remains indelible.
