Democratic policing key to effective police force -Alobi
The former Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Chief Executive Officer, Hi-Tech Security and Training Limited, COMPOL Lawrence Eko Alobi (rtd) has said that democratic policing is key in tackling security challenges in the country.
Bar Lawrence was speaking with our Correspondent in Abuja on Friday, saying that democratic policing is for the people and by the people; it is also policing with community norms value.
” Democratic policing is participatory in nature and it is based on democratic rules and values, the rule of law, protection of human rights and problem solving.
“If the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) carry out aggressive training on democratic policing, it can be integrated with the community policing as a framework of policing.
This will endear the people to the police as it can help in getting information from the public and also help police officers apply emotional intelligence to law enforcement.
The country is facing serious security challenges due to systemic rot and this can only be solved by adequate funding and increase in manpower in the NPF”, Alobi stated.
He also called on sister agencies to put an end to unnecessary and unhealthy competition, adding that they are supposed to complement each other in order to checkmate crimes and insecurity in the country.
Alobi further called on the government to increase the number of officers 800, 000, stating that the manpower of the NPF is grossly inadequate.
He also advocated for the empowerment of private security in the country in order to complement the efforts of the government.
He said that these organisations are providing jobs and adding values to the lives of the masses and can be used to achieve desired result in the NPF.
He, however, enjoins Nigerians to put aside political, ethnicity and religious differences in order to work for the good of the nation.
