Hon. Abbas to FRSC: stop issuing driving license without proper traffic education
In a bid to drastically reduce the spate of road accidents, Honourable Tajudeen Abbas, member representing Zaria federal constituency in the House of Representatives has charged Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to stop issuing driving license without proper traffic education of prospective road users.
Hon Abbas also emphasized on the need for the FRSC to continuously education Nigerians especially drivers plying the high ways.
The lawmaker was speaking with our Correspondent on Tuesday in Abuja, on the motion by Senator Suleiman Kwari (APC Kaduna North), “the need to address the increasing rate of traffic accidents along Kaduna – Zaria – Kano road” on the floor of Senate.
According him, road accidents have particularly in the last two months increased because of the rainy season. And with the construction on the roads, visibility is usually poor as one hardly sees beyond 20 meters.
Hon. Abbas noted that in recent years people just drive on the road without adequate knowledge of the traffic laws. And this is one of the things contributing to the menace of road accidents in the country.
“We had thought that with the establishment of the FRSC, people will only obtain drivers’ license when they are tested. But it has shown that it is not working as people can just get the license without any form of traffic education and testing.
“This, calls for more vigilance on the part of the FRSC to put more men on the axis where roads are being constructed to ensure that they guide the people as that are plying the road.
“There is need for the FRSC to step up in the issuance of driving license and education on federal high ways; so that drivers will be more enlightened and cautious to obey the traffic rules in order to minimize accidents on our major high ways”, He stated.
The lawmaker also said that there is need for inter-agency collaborations, adding that it is important for the VIO, The Nigeria Police Force to collaborate with the FRSC and be present at strategic places in order to guide and control traffic.
He also urged Nigerians to be patient especially when driving, stating that it is better to arrive where ever you are going late than to be involved in an accident that might claim life or result in a permanent injury.
Hon. Abbas further stated that road signs should be adequately provided as majority of our roads are lacking in that aspect, thereby contributing to road accidents.
