Hon. Afe Wants Fed. University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun Domiciled in Ministry of Petroleum Resources
Hon. Oberuakpefe Anthony Afe, member representing Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency of Delta State, has said that if the objectives of establishing the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun are to be achieved, then it should be domiciled in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and not Ministry of Education.
In his lead debate on a “Bill for an Act to Amend the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (Establishment) Act, 2017 and for Other Related Matters, 2019,” on Tuesday, Afe said domiciling the university in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources will enable the university to focus on its core mandate of providing solution to the oil industry .
“Overtime, specialized institutions that were domiciled in the Ministry of Education lost focus and today operate like other conventional universities,” he said.
The Lawmaker also stated that another advantage of domicilng the university in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources is that it will enhance its funding through PTDF and other agencies that have direct bearing with the oil and gas industry as envisioned in the Principal Act.
Hon. Afe also said the amendment being sought is to make the university operate in line with the international best practice. He cited Iran, India, France, China among others to support his argument.
The bill passed through the Second Reading and was referred to relevant House Committees for further legislative actions.
