Matawalle Backs Tinubu’s State of Emergency in Rivers, Warns Against Disruptions
The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammad Matawalle, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as a crucial step toward restoring stability amid the state’s prolonged political crisis.
In a statement signed by Iyogun Sunday on behalf of the Director of Information, Matawalle stressed that the move was necessary to address governance disruptions that have plagued the state.
He called on all political actors to comply with the President’s directive and work towards a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
The Minister assured that the Nigerian military is on high alert to protect government infrastructure and ensure public safety.
He warned that any attempts to attack government facilities or instigate disorder would be met with a firm response from security forces.
Matawalle highlighted the gravity of the situation, citing the controversial demolition of the House of Assembly by the state governor, which has left Rivers without a functional legislature for over 14 months.
He noted that this has worsened the political impasse, making it difficult for the government to effectively serve its citizens.
He also referenced a recent Supreme Court ruling that reaffirmed the constitutional necessity of a functioning legislature and condemned the governor’s actions as unconstitutional. According to the Minister, the ruling underscores the urgency of restoring democratic governance in Rivers State.
Expressing concern over reports of vandalism and militant threats, Matawalle reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to securing lives and property. He emphasized that national security agencies would take all necessary measures to maintain peace in the state.
Reaffirming the dedication of the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces to national security, Matawalle urged all stakeholders to seize this opportunity to rebuild governance structures.
He expressed optimism that the state of emergency would pave the way for lasting peace and stability in Rivers State.
