Matawalle condemns visa denial to Nigerian Defence Chief, calls for diplomatic action
The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, has condemned the recent visa denial to Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other members of the Nigerian delegation en route to Canada for a veterans’ event.
In a statement signed by Iyogun Sunday on behalf of the Director of Information and Public Relations, Matawalle described the incident as a “serious affront to Nigeria’s national dignity and integrity,” calling on the Nigerian government to respond decisively.
The visa denial prevented the military delegation from attending a significant event in Canada, which was meant to honor Nigerian veterans. Matawalle expressed deep disappointment over the development, warning that such incidents could strain bilateral relations between Nigeria and Canada if left unaddressed.
“This incident is not merely a bureaucratic oversight; it is a serious affront to our national dignity and integrity.
“We cannot allow our country to be treated with such disregard and levity on the international stage,” he said.
The minister emphasized the need for an immediate and thorough investigation to determine the reasons behind the visa refusals. He urged Nigerian authorities to adopt a firm diplomatic stance if a satisfactory explanation is not provided.
“We must not remain passive in the face of such disrespect. It is imperative that the Nigerian government takes a firm diplomatic stance.
“If no satisfactory explanation is provided, we must be prepared to respond appropriately and assertively,” Matawalle stated.
The visa denial raises concerns about Canada’s treatment of Nigerian military officials and the broader state of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
While the exact reasons for the visa denials remain unclear, the incident highlights ongoing challenges Nigerian officials face in international engagements.
