Ministry of Defence mourns former President Muhammadu Buhari, hails his legacy of patriotism and discipline
The Ministry of Defence has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a towering figure in the nation’s military and democratic history. Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London clinic.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, the ministry extended its heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Buhari family, and the entire nation.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces, I express our profound sorrow on the demise of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“His death marks the end of an era for a man whose life was defined by service, patriotism, and an unwavering commitment to the Nigerian nation”, the statement read.
Buhari’s distinguished career in the military saw him rise to the rank of General and serve as Nigeria’s Military Head of State from 1983 to 1985.
Decades later, he returned as a democratically elected President, leading the country from 2015 to 2023.
The Ministry highlighted Buhari’s integrity, discipline, and steadfast devotion to national unity as enduring values that shaped his public life and inspired millions.
“He was not only a military leader but a statesman whose commitment to an indivisible Nigeria was unwavering. His leadership, both in and out of uniform, reflected his deep love for the country,” Matawalle stated.
Describing him as a role model to many, the Minister noted that Buhari’s contributions would remain indelible in Nigeria’s national history.
“His legacy of honour and integrity will continue to guide future generations of leaders and citizens alike”, he added.
The Defence Ministry prayed for the peaceful repose of the late President’s soul and asked Almighty Allah to grant him Aljanatul Firdaus.
Buhari’s death has sparked a wave of national mourning, with tributes pouring in from across Nigeria and around the world.
