Nigeria reaffirms commitment to global peace at UN Peacekeeping ministerial session
Nigeria has once again pledged its steadfast support for international peace and security efforts, with the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, reaffirming the country’s dedication to United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations.
Speaking during the second day of the High-Level Plenary Pledging Session of the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025, Badaru underscored Nigeria’s long-standing role as a key contributor to global peace missions.
His remarks were contained in a statement signed by Patience Ituke, on behalf of the Director of Information and Public Relations, Ministry of Defence.
The Minister spotlighted Nigeria’s ongoing deployments, particularly the rotation of its Base Protection Force to the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei and the Formed Police Unit at the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia.
These, he noted, demonstrate Nigeria’s continued engagement in upholding peace in conflict-prone areas.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s leadership within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU), pointing to past and recent peacekeeping interventions in Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau as evidence of the country’s enduring regional influence and commitment.
In a move to bolster Nigeria’s role in international peace efforts, Badaru announced the country’s renewed pledges to the UN’s Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System.
According to him, Nigeria is adding five new commitments aimed at strengthening its capacity and preparedness to support future peacekeeping operations.
He concluded his address by reiterating Nigeria’s resolve to be a reliable partner in fostering peace, security, and stability across the globe.
