Over 17,000 girls displaced amid rising rights violations, says Rights Commission
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reported alarming figures indicating a sharp increase in the number of displaced girls and women across Nigeria, along with rising incidents of human rights violations.
In a recent dashboard presentation for the months of August and September, the NHRC revealed that 17,097 girls and 20,705 women have been displaced across various regions covered by the commission’s project. Additionally, the commission documented 1,039 instances of human rights violations, including cases related to the rights of asylum seekers, displaced families, and vulnerable communities.
Officials stated that the data was compiled through on-the-ground efforts, including awareness campaigns, household interviews, and monitoring activities carried out by field staff. The report underscores growing concerns about deteriorating conditions in displacement camps and host communities.
Key challenges highlighted include limited access to essential services, such as shelter, healthcare, and education—particularly for women and girls. Analysts noted that if the current trends continue, figures for October are expected to reflect further increases in displacement and rights violations.
The NHRC emphasized the need for stronger coordination among humanitarian agencies, local authorities, and the international community. The Commission reiterated its commitment to monitoring, protecting, and promoting human rights, urging stakeholders to respond swiftly to the worsening crisis.
