Reps move to abolish caretaker chairman
While pushing for the autonomy of local government, a bill seeking to abolish issue of caretaker chairman on Tuesday passed second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives.
The bill which was sponsored by Honourable Bagos Dachung Musa, member representing Jos South and East Federal Constituency, was seeking to ‘Alter section 7 (1) of the principal act by substituting section section 7 (1) with new section 7 (1) (a)-(z) to provide for the office of chairman and vice chairman of the local government councils.
In pursuant of autonomy for the local government, Hon. Dachung stated that the bill is seeking to provide qualification and disqualification of chairman, assets and liabilities as well as oath of office.
According to the Lawmaker, the bill is seeking nomination, election and tenure of office and removal from office of the chairman, vice chairman and councillor through a democratic process.
Dachung also said that the bill further seeks the proscription of mode of exercising legislative power of the local government.
