Senate Considers Bill to establish NBRRI
The Senate on Thursday, considered bill seeking to give statutory backing to get the establishment of the Nigeria Building and Road Research Institution (NBRRI) during the plenary.
Sponsored by Sen. Ekwunife (Anambra Central), the bill was first read in the upper chamber on Wednesday 19th February, 2020.
Leading the debate, Anambra lawmaker stated that the bill seeks to establish a legal framework for NBRRI, to conduct applied integrated research and development on buildings, roads, engineering construction, materials and methods, as well as socio economic impacts of constructions, and other environmental factors that affect building and road performances in the country.
“In this time that global events have caused nations to look inward for sourcing of their needs and survival, it is necessary now than ever before that Nigeria begins to work towards self reliance in critical building materials. This can be achieved by incorporating local materials into building her infrastructure. This bill seeks to make NBRRI a key institution that will largely work towards achieving these set goals”, she stated.
The bill, however, scaled second reading in the Senate and was referred to the relevant Committee for further legislative inputs.
