We can’t afford a repeat of ebola out break in the country -Hon. Pascal
In order to prevent a repeat of Ebola out break, Chairman, House Committee on Health Institutions, Honourable Pascal Obi moved to warn Nigerians on the pending re-occurence of the disease in the country.
Hon. Obi was speaking with our Correspondent in Abuja, shortly after moving a motion on ‘the urgent need for proactive measures against reoccurence of ebola out break’, on the floor of the House of Representatives on Tuesday 5, 2019.
He pointed out that there are cases of ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo and other neighbouring countries, adding that the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned member nations on the pending dangers of ebola outbreak.
He also stated that WHO advised member countries to take preventive measures to guard against reoccurrence of ebola outbreak.
While commending the Federal Government on decisive action against ebola outbreak in 2014, he is worried that Nigera is still at risks of possible outbreak of ebola.
Hon. Obi stated that while there are preventive measures in place at International Airports, nothing is being done on land borders and Sea Ports.
“I was trying to draw the attention of the members to the fact that there are other routes through which foreigners gain entry into the country”, he stated.
He disclosed that no precautionary measures are being taken in those routes. “If you cover the International Airports, what happens if the land borders and Sea Ports are left porous? You have not done much. There is need to deploy those preventive measures to those areas”, he added.
This, the lawmaker said will ensure that the country is completely insulated from another outbreak of ebola.
“We cannot afford to have a repeat of such an ugly and devastating situations we had in 2014”, he insisted.
Hon. Obi further informed that since the budget has not been passed, the House Committee on Health Institutions, will do everything it takes to ensure that adequate provisions will be made to accommodate the resolution of the house to the effect of management or setting up isolation centers in case of eventualities.
After the judgement of the appeal court on legal battle challenging his victory at the February 23 polls which went in his favour, the lawmaker, said that it is now time to relax and do what my constituents expect him to do.
“Their expectations are enormous and I got my victory due to the trust and love for me despite the fact that I had to move from All Progressives Congress (APC) to Action Alliance, due to politically induced motives”, he stated.
Honourable Pascal Obi is representing the industrious and hospitable people of Ideato North and South federal constituency of Imo State.
