What Hon. Jega said on plights of IDPs in the country
It is a common knowledge that there are over two million Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs across the country as a result of insurgency, armed banditary and other man made or natural disasters.
Against this background, Honourable Muhammed Umar Jega, member representing Aliero/Gwandu/Jega in the House of Representatives and Chairman, Committee on Internally Displaced Persons has said that efforts are in top gear to ensure that quality humanitarian assistance is given to the IDPs.
Honourable Jega was speaking with our Correspondent on Wednesday in Abuja.
“The National Refugee Commission, NRC, which is saddled with the responsibility of catering is working hard to see that humanitarian assistance is given to the displaced persons, immigrants and homeless.
“The NRC and Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs have just defended their budgets and we have looked at their submission to see how best we can come to the aid of the unfortunate victims.
“The creation of new ministry of humanitarian affairs under President Muhammadu Buhari to coordinate all the humanitarian concerns for the IDPs and migrants is a serious step in the right direction.
“Before now there is no such coordination as cases of diversions of relief materials for IDPs were reported, but with the creation of the new ministry, things will change and we are going to give them the necessary backing to ensure that their situations improve.
“There are going to be durable solutions to the challenges of IDPs. Durable solutions mean that will be a mean of livelihood when they go back.
“We will do the needful to ensure that the security situations improve because security is paramount to their survival”, the lawmaker said.
On the just concluded Local Government Elections in Kebbi State, he stated that the turnout of voters was encouraging and commendable, adding the winners are those believed to have capacity to lead.
He further stated that Speaker of the House of Representatives has assured that the committees of the National Assembly will work hard to see that they meet the given timeline.
“House of Representatives is doing her best to ensure that the expectations of the people are met”, he said.
