Hon. Bamisile moves to address power outage in Gbonyin and Ekiti East LGAs of Ekiti State
Member representing Emure/Gbonyin/Ekiti East Federal Constituency, Honourable Bamisile Olufemi Richard has moved to address the power outage in Gbonyin Ekiti East Local Government Areas of Ekiti State.
In a motion tilted ‘Need to Prevail on the Benin Electricity Distribution Company PLC (BEDC) to Address the power outage in Gbonyin and Ekiti East Local Government Areas of Ekiti State’, during the plenary on Wednesday, Hon. Bamisile noted that the importance of electricity in the individual, domestic and commercial lives of an individual and corporate citizens and communities cannot be overemphasised as electricity is needed in all areas of life.
“The provision of Electric Power Sector Reform Act, 2005 private companies are given opportunities to partivipate in electricity generation, distribution and transmission and the BEDC is one of the private companies participating in the electricity distribution in the country and also responsible for the supply of electricity to Gbonyin and Ekiti East LGAs”, he noted.
He observed that Gbonyin Local Government Area consists of seven towns while Ekiti East Local Government consist of eleven towns.
The lawmaker is concerned that for over eight years, towns and villages in these LGAs have been living in darkness as residents do not get electricity supply from BEDC, thereby bringing economic activities, family and social lives to a standstill with attendant consequences to the economic wellbeing, prosperity and health of the residents as private individuals and corporate citizens transacting business in the areas are compelled to buy diesel and fuel at exorbitant prices to power generators.
He is worried that the people of the communities are being denied benefits associated with electricity supply by failure of the distribution company to supply and distribute electricity to the residents and if nothing is done, they will continue to live in darkness with attendant security and socio-economic consequences.
The house therefore resolved to invite BEDC to interface with the Committee on Power to explain the reasons for its failure, neglect or refusal to supply electricity to Gbonyin and Ekiti East LGAs of the State and also mandated the Committees on Power and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
