Hon. Chima wants data bank for youth in Nigeria
Member representing Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta/Oru West Federal Constituency of Imo State, Honourable Uju Kingsley Chima has called on the Federal Government to design data bank for youth in Nigeria.
Leading a debate titled, ‘Need to Design Youth Data Bank in Nigeria’, Tuesday, noted that the population distribution chart of Nigeria indicates that youth made up of graduates, undergraduates, artisans and the unemployed or unengaged are not accurately captured in a data bank.
He also stated that the inadequacy of knowledge of exact engagement status of the youth has hampered policy formulation and implementation in Nigeria.
Hon. Chima acknowledges the giant strides of the Federal Government through the various Social Investment Programmes like N-power targeted at youth empowerment.
The lawmaker is convinced that a robust and detailed data bank generated through the various Federal Constituencies and Senatorial Districts will effectively curb all systemic challenges, including corrupt practices associated with the old system of engagement without a documented statistics of the youths.
Cognizant of the fact that such data bank will specifically indicate the employment, skills, ability and disability status and other considerations in the engagement requirements of youth for effective policy formulation, implementation and other deliverables in Nigeria in confronting unemployment and absence of empowerment;
The house, therefore, resolved to urge the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and Labour and Employment to build effective synergy to generate a data bank for youths to enhance their chances of obtaining empowerment and employment.
The house also mandated the Committee on Youth Development to ensure implementation.
