APC presidential screening: Ten aspirants disqualified
Ahead of 2023 elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Screening Committee has affirmed the disqualification of 10 aspirants from its primaries scheduled for Monday next week.
The Chairman of the Committee, the former Edo State Governor, Mr John Oyegun gave the affirmation in Abuja on Friday shortly after submitting the Committee Report to the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
According to Mr Oyegun, only 13 out of the 23 aspirants screened were cleared by the Committee.
He however did not reveal the identity of the disqualified aspirants, saying the party will disclose their names in due time.
Mr Oyegun added that contrary to rumours making rounds, it did not screen former President Goodluck Jonathan.
It could be recalled that the Committee held the screening exercise between Monday and Tuesday this week.
In his remarks, the National Chairman of the party, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu noted that whoever emerges to be the flag bearer for the party is only the symbol of the party. He is hoping that the spirit in which they approach the convention will guide everyone.
In his words: “To our distinguish members of the presidential Screening Committee of our great party APC led by no other person, our former chairman and former governor of edo state chief John Oyegun.
“My dear colleagues of the national working committee, this is the day we have been waiting for to receive the report of this very imminent committee that seat and considered, interacted, appraise the submission of all the members of the aspiring community of the presidential election. I listen with very keen interest of the comment that the chairman made in the course of this submission.
“One thing I found worthy is the fact that the Nigerian youth have responded, they have among them people who reap the spirit of competition and offered themselves to be considered the important office in the land.
“They have done this thinking of the spirit of one of the act we passed sometimes during the 8th national assembly; the act of not too young to run.
“So I feel encourage, we feel encouraged as a party that young people and the young women have offered themselves to contest for this office.
“We received the report now on each of them, we will consider on a very highest level of the party and see how we would approach before the forthcoming convention which have ultimate authority on the choice of who takes the flag of our party.
“The flag does not belong to me, it doesn’t belong to anyone of us it is the flag of the party and corporate body called the APC”.
