Sen Nwoko condemns killing of 2yr old in Delta state by NDLEA operatives
The Senator who represents the people of Delta North in the Upper Legislative Chamber, a prominent member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Sen Nwoko Chinedu Munir, has decried the excessive use of lethal force by a section of the security agencies in the discharge of their duties which mostly results in the lost of innocent lives.
He stated that the National Assembly would continue to support security agencies to ensure adequate protection of lives and property of Nigerians at all times irrespective of their geographical location as well as social status and also put a stop to incessant killings being perpetrated by some bad eggs in the nation’s security apparatus .
This according to the lawmarker is aimed at checkmating the unprofessional conduct of the personnel who man these agencies where lack of proper background checks and psychological counseling is not employed in their recruitment process.
He made this position known while interacting with journalist at the National Assembly,Abuja. The Senator expressed sadness over the reported killing of a 2year old toddler in Delta state by NDLEA operatives while carrying out and operation.
The lawmaker said that Nigerians irrespective of their status deserved to live and not to be killed by those who are paid to protect them and their property.
While expressing his condolence to the family of the victims of the stray bullet,he assured that the perpetrators of the killing will be brought to justice at the end of the day.
He therefore called on security agencies to conduct proper background checks, and ensure that those who are to be recruited pass through mental health test, this he said will put a stop to avoidable killings of innocent Nigerians.
It is worthy of note that the Senator had earlier sponsored a motion on the floor of the Senate titled”Need to Investigate the Incessant and Nefarious acts of Crude Oil Thefts in the Niger Delta and its Actors”.
In the motion he drew the attention of his colleagues to the danger faced by Nigerians and the economy if the nefarious activities of these economic saboteurs are left unchallenged.
He therefore called for action to be taken which includes: investigating the activities of security forces, militia organization and oil company employees that use sophisticated methods to steal oil.
Another solution proffered by the lawmaker in his motion was for government to consider officially engaging modular and illegal refinery operators in oil production as well as the use of modern technology.
