Matawalle defends Badaru’s official trip to Dubai Airshow, assures Nigerians of continuity in Defence Ministry amid security concerns
The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has dismissed growing public concerns over the absence of the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, at a time when the country is grappling with heightened security challenges.
In a statement released on Thursday, Matawalle clarified that Minister Badaru is in the United Arab Emirates attending the 2025 Dubai International Airshow, a major global defence and aerospace event, with the full approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Matawalle explained that the Minister is accompanied by senior military officials as part of Nigeria’s delegation to the biennial airshow, which brings together global defence leaders, innovators, political figures and top security officials.
He described speculations around the minister’s travel as “misleading,” noting that Badaru did not leave the country in disregard of Nigeria’s internal security situation.
“Minister Badaru’s official engagement abroad does not diminish our sensitivity or response to the current security situation at home,” Matawalle said.
“Our combined efforts will ensure that we continue to address these challenges effectively.”
The Minister of State also addressed concerns regarding the concurrent absence of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General O.O. Oluyede, noting that their international engagements were part of coordinated, approved duties.
The Dubai Airshow is regarded as one of the world’s top platforms for showcasing advancements in aerospace, space technology and defence innovation. Countries use the event to explore partnerships, expand military-industrial collaborations and drive strategic defence investments.
Nigeria’s participation, according to Matawalle, is crucial for projecting the country’s progress in defence technology and strengthening its presence in global security forums
Responding to concerns over the recent abduction of school students, Matawalle reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to securing their release.
“I immediately condemned the abduction and directed our security agencies to coordinate their efforts for the safe return of the students,” he said.
“Our strategies are in place, and we are in constant communication with relevant authorities to facilitate their safe release.”
He stressed that he remains fully on ground to oversee ongoing security operations while Badaru continues Nigeria’s representation abroad.
Nigerians that the Defence Ministry’s work is not hindered by official travels, noting that the two-minister arrangement in some ministries, including Defence, ensures operational continuity.
“This structure allows us to maintain momentum in our operations, regardless of any minister’s travel for official duties,” he added.
He confirmed that Minister Badaru will immediately resume active engagement in Nigeria’s security response upon his return from Dubai.
