Nigeria, Germany strengthen defence ties with renewed MoU
The Governments of Nigeria and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering defence cooperation through the signing of a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the German Technical Advisory Group (GTAG).
The agreement, which has been in place for 12 years and is renewed every four years, was formalized at a ceremony held at Ship House, Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Ambassador Gabriel Tanimu Aduda, described the MoU as a strategic counterpart funding arrangement that highlights the strong defence ties between both nations.
He emphasized that the renewed agreement aligns with the shared objectives of Nigeria and Germany, fostering long-term security collaboration and developmental goals.
Ambassador Aduda reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to accountability and efficiency in implementing the agreement, stressing the importance of adhering to strict timelines and rigorous monitoring to ensure effective execution.
He also assured that procurement processes under the MoU would be thoroughly evaluated to guarantee value for money.
On behalf of Germany, Colonel Boris Bovekemp, the Defence Attaché to Nigeria, reaffirmed his country’s dedication to enhancing cooperation, particularly in the areas of defence, security, and capacity building.
He praised the enduring partnership between the two nations and stressed the need to strengthen existing agreements to address evolving security challenges.
The renewal of the MoU marks a significant milestone in the Nigeria-Germany defence partnership, reinforcing joint efforts to improve security, capacity development, and technical cooperation.
